ATLANTA, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In its latest Bird's Eye View advisory, Wren, a company dedicated to creating safer learning environments, asks school administrators, teachers and security personnel: "What good is a drill if it does not improve emergency preparedness?"
In the new advisory, Wren offers five ways schools can better prepare for emergencies by improving the way in which they conduct drills on campus. These include incorporating the element of surprise, using video for post-drill analysis, including everyone on campus at the time of the drill, enlisting the help of local law enforcement, and expecting the unexpected.
"Unfortunately, emergency drills are similar to tests that are just too easy – they aren't challenging, everyone passes, and people don't bother to study. It's fair to say that people in those circumstances are just going through the motions. How was your last drill measured, were the results analyzed and shared to enhanced emergency preparedness?" asked Jeff Floreno, Director of Operations and Security Strategy at Wren. "Much like the ill-prepared student who received an 'easy A', he will eventually learn that he is ill-prepared to perform in the real world. People who grudgingly participate in emergency drills, and are distracted by talking with friends, will not learn what they need to know when an actual emergency strikes."
According to Wren, drills have the power to save lives when they test preparedness, improve reactions and measure progress.
