Yale University Selects Panopto for Campus-wide Video Content Management and Capture
SEATTLE, Aug. 30, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Panopto today announced that its video platform has been selected by Yale University for campus-wide video content management, recording, and streaming. As part of the announcement, Panopto will convert over 10,000 hours of existing content from the university's legacy video platforms, Kaltura and Echo360.
The Challenge: Standardize Video Learning Across Campus
In 2014, Yale's Technology Architecture Committee commissioned a report analyzing the current landscape of video solutions at the university. Like many institutions, Yale had initially adopted video at a departmental level. This proved the potential of video as a study aid, but it introduced challenges for university administrators and students:
- It required the university to maintain several different systems across campus, resulting in IT management complexity.
- It required students to learn multiple systems for accessing their recorded lectures, flipped classroom videos, and other academic video content.
As the use of video became more prevalent at Yale, the university began a search for a unified video platform that could address the needs of faculty, staff, and students in all departments.
The Solution: Panopto's Video Platform
A working group consisting of Yale's Center for Teaching and Learning, the Information Technology Services team, and representatives from six of Yale's professional schools reviewed the capabilities of eight video platforms. Each platform was evaluated based on a range of criteria, including:
- Ease of use
- Tools for video creation and curation
- Accessibility
- Integration with Canvas and Sakai LMSs
- Responsiveness of customer support
- Live streaming
- Video search
After an extensive review by the working group, members voted to adopt Panopto, replacing the university's existing contracts with Kaltura and Echo360. The working group also recommended that existing Kaltura and Echo360 video content be migrated to the new Panopto system.
