Youth Corrections Leaders and Mother of Kalief Browder Come Together to Stop Solitary Confinement for Kids
WASHINGTON, April 11, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Youth corrections administrators, parents, and advocates announce the launch of a national effort to end solitary confinement of youth. The event will include remarks from Venida Browder, the mother of Kalief Browder, who committed suicide after spending two years in solitary at Rikers Island jail in New York City. A panel of directors of state juvenile justice agencies will discuss successful strategies to end this harmful practice. Thousands of young people are held in solitary confinement each year across the country, yet research shows that solitary makes kids worse without making facilities safer. Several states, including those represented, have significantly reduced or eliminated solitary confinement in their juvenile facilities. President Obama recently adopted recommendations of the Justice Department report on solitary confinement by banning solitary for youth in federal custody and encouraging states to follow suit.
