Zafirro, the $100,000 sapphire blade razor, now $199
Zafirro's new model, the Z2, was released on Kickstarter this morning
PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- After more than eight years of R&D, Zafirro, Inc today announced the Zafirro Z2, the first sapphire blade razor aimed at the mass market. The Z2 launched early this morning on Kickstarter for under $200.
"This has been our goal for nearly a decade," said Zafirro founder Hayden Hamilton. "We are unbelievably excited to finally be able to make a product that more than a handful of people in the world can afford and to have a shot at meaningfully changing the industry."
The EPA estimates that more than 2 billion razor blades go into US landfills every year. Since inception, Zafirro's mission has been to create blades that last much longer than steel blades. Sapphire is one of the hardest substances on the planet, so the blades stay sharp a very long time. Zafirro's current generation of pure, white sapphire blades stay sharp for 6-12 months, but Zafirro's lab results have demonstrated the potential for them to last many times that long.
In addition to vastly extended blade life, Zafirro's sapphire blades offer a number of advantages over steel blades -- they are hypoallergenic, won't oxidize or corrode, and are very sharp. Zafirro uses semiconductor manufacturing technology to get the tips of their blades down to less than 80 atoms, roughly 5,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair.
Zafirro received international attention four years ago, including being named one of Time Magazine's 50 Best Inventions, when it launched the first sapphire blade razor, the Zafirro Iridium, for $100,000.
The significant decrease in cost that makes the Z2 possible today is the result of four years of optimizing the manufacturing process with existing suppliers, finding new approaches and new manufacturing partners, and a major increase in global sapphire production for use by the high tech industry in advanced solar panels, LEDs, and iPhones.
Zafirro's Kickstarter campaign runs today through January 5, 2016.
