NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the dam collapse Friday near Brumadinho, Brazil, where hundreds of people have been reported missing, a delegation of ZAKA Search and Rescue volunteers flew in from Ben-Gurion airport to assist with rescue efforts.
ZAKA, a UN-recognized international rescue organization, is a global volunteer based rescue and recovery organization. The organization offers a swift search, rescue and recovery response to mass casualty incidents around the globe. ZAKA's UN recognition enables them to offer emergency assistance even before the host country has formally asked for help.
"ZAKA has accumulated vast experience in search, rescue and recovery at dozens of mass casualty incidents and terror attacks around the world. With this experience, we are able to save lives and significantly contribute to the local search and rescue efforts," said Mati Goldstein, ZAKA International Rescue Unit commander, who is leading the ZAKA delegation in Brazil. "Our mission will focus on rescuing survivors, and search and recovery of those killed in the disaster," he added.
ZAKA brings their state of the art search equipment, including their sonar device, to assist in the search. This same device was also used in Budapest during the initial sweep of the riverbed in search of Holocaust remains.
"We hope that with the training and expertise that ZAKA is bringing to Brazil will help in the search and recovery of many lives," said Edward Mermelstein, ZAKA President.
ZAKA will issue updates of their mission during the next week.
