WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer appointed former Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Director Leo Giambarresi, Ph.D., to its Board of Directors. Additionally, past CEO Quentin "Skip" Lockwood will assume the role of Vice Chairman of the Board while ESPN Commentator and former Vice Chairman Mitch Laurance will remain on the organization's board.
"ZERO's top responsibility is to protect and grow federal funds for prostate cancer research to achieve new lifesaving treatments and breakthroughs in detection and diagnosis," Jamie Bearse, ZERO's CEO said. "We're thrilled to have Dr. Giambarresi join the organization to provide insight into the DOD's PCRP and strategy to grow the program."
Dr. Giambarresi, who retired in 2014 as Director of Research at the American Urological Association Foundation, dedicated his career to the study and eradication of prostate cancer. As the former head of the PCRP, part of the DOD's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, Dr. Giambarresi presided over a program that prioritizes research to develop better tools for early detection, distinguish aggressive from indolent disease, develop effective treatments and address mechanisms of resistance for men with high risk or advanced prostate cancer, and develops strategies to optimize the physical and mental health of men with prostate cancer. In the last four years, the PCRP has developed three new FDA-approved treatments for advanced disease.
ZERO's Board of Directors also includes Chairman Jonathan Schwartz, Vice Chairman Quentin "Skip" Lockwood, Treasurer Mike Smith, Steve Cooper, Sherry Galloway, R.N., Robert Ginyard, Nicola Howard, Mitch Laurance, Sanford Siegel, M.D., and Robin Sparrow.
