Amira Learning available as Canada's only AI-driven reading intervention for school districts, licenses now eligible for Ontario Ministry of Education funding
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Amira Learning (Amira), a leader in systematic and explicit evidence-based, AI-powered reading programs and interventions, has been approved for distribution by Ontario Education Collaborative Marketplace (OECM) under its Systematic and Explicit Evidence-Based Reading Programs and Interventions agreement.
Through a partnership with Pearson Canada, Amira is now the only AI-powered reading programs and intervention partner in Ontario's procurement system, providing assessment and tutoring to meet diverse student needs and improve reading outcomes through systematic, explicit and evidence-based instruction as outlined by OECM.
Structured to deliver evidence-based reading instruction across grades, Amira has been proven to improve reading outcomes through multiple independent research studies. Amira supports whole-class, small-group and individual instruction, offering scalable assessment and tutoring for students who need foundational practice, skill-specific reinforcement or more intensive intervention.
"Ontario's focus on systematic, explicit and evidence-based instruction and intervention is exactly what students need and exactly what Amira is built to deliver," said Mark Angel, CEO of Amira Learning. "We've combined AI with validated reading science to help teachers do what they do best: help every student become a proficient reader. With Pearson, we're proud to bring an innovative solution to Canadian classrooms. One that's as rigorous as it is responsive."
Amira aligns with OECM's criteria for Systematic and Explicit Evidence-Based Reading Programs and Interventions by combining decades of reading and neuroscience research with AI. The result is a unified, coherent learning cycle where assessment, instruction and practice work seamlessly together. Ontario school districts are now able to purchase the Amira Reading Suite with funds from the Ontario Ministry of Education (MEDU). With Amira, teachers will have access to an assistant that is fully connected to their provincial curriculum and instructional calendar.
"OECM developed this agreement in collaboration with MEDU to support access to proven, research-backed reading programs and interventions," said Mie Okawa, Senior Supplier Relationship Manager of OECM. "The agreement aligns with the Ministry's focus on strengthening early literacy and supports the use of provincial funding to purchase approved reading tools. OECM is proud to continue working with MEDU and our supplier partners on this agreement to support improved reading outcomes for students across Ontario."
Studies have consistently shown accelerated reading growth among K-8 struggling readers and multilingual students when using Amira for as little as 30 minutes each week. Amira's AI proctors, scores and analyzes the assessment, capturing over 10 times more measurement points than traditional screeners in just 20 minutes. This reduces the burden on teachers and provides clear, actionable insights to guide instruction and intervention.
Validated by leading universities and state agencies, Amira is uniquely designed to accurately improve students' reading skills and assist teachers in delivering systemic and explicit instruction, ultimately improving literacy outcomes and saving teachers hours of extra work. Amira does this through:
- Trained on billions of minutes of spoken English across diverse dialects, accents and speech patterns
- Identifying difficulties in phonemic awareness, processing speed and vocabulary development to inform instructional decisions
- Analyzing over 10 times more measurable points than traditional assessments in 20 minutes or less
- Providing skill-specific tutoring, phonics-based instruction and interventions that adjust in real time
- Responding to every word a student reads aloud with individualized feedback
"At Pearson Canada, we are committed to empowering educators with innovative tools that foster literacy and unlock every student's potential," said Giselle Goncalves, Vice President of K12 Canada for Pearson. "Our partnership with Amira Learning brings cutting-edge, AI-driven reading support to classrooms across Ontario, ensuring teachers have the resources they need to deliver evidence-based instruction and help all learners thrive."
Amira's AI models are purpose-built to support students from diverse language backgrounds in developing reading fluency. All student data is kept private, securely stored and never used to train public or third-party AI models. The company has seen success across the U.S. and has worked with ministries of education internationally. This approval in Ontario marks the first time Amira has been approved through a public procurement agency in Canada. Amira ISIP Assess and Amira Tutor are both available now for distribution through the OECM procurement channel through Pearson Canada.
