Arcadia University Hosts Regional Education Conference, Nov. 11-12

Intervention Not Incarceration: Supporting Our Youth with Emotional and Behavioral Challenges

GLENSIDE, Pa., Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Arcadia University's School of Continuing Studies is hosting a conference on "Intervention Not Incarceration: Supporting Children and Youth with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders," on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11 and 12.

The conference is sponsored by Arcadia's BBEST Program and Black Male Development Symposium, and the Devereux Center for Effective Schools and the program includes contributions of nationally and state-recognized presenters, and Arcadia faculty in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Counseling Psychology, and Education. It will be held at Arcadia's King of Prussia campus located at 1150 First Ave., Suite 700, King of Prussia, Pa.

This conference brings together professionals from across disciplines -- teachers, therapists, psychologists, behavior specialists, behavior analysts, school administrators, social workers, juvenile justice professionals, and parents -- to disseminate and discuss new research and practices related to effective interventions for and the education of children and youth with emotional and behavioral disorders.

Dr. Lucille Eber, will give the keynote address on Friday, Nov. 11, followed by work sessions and panel discussions with participating faculty from Arcadia University on both days of the conference.

Eber is the State Director of the Illinois Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Network, sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education. This network coordinates technical assistance and evaluation related to school-wide PBIS in more than 1,300 Illinois schools and includes implementation of wraparound and interagency initiatives for students with complex emotional and behavioral challenges. As a collaborative partner with the U.S. Department of Education's National PBIS Center, Eber also facilitates PBIS implementation and training plans for states and school districts across the country. Eber is a former board member of both the Illinois Federation of Families (IFF) and the national Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health (FFCCMH) and the Association for Positive Behavior Supports (APBS). She regularly publishes articles and chapters on wraparound, interagency systems of care and school-wide positive behavior supports.

Topics of discussion to be addressed include:

1. Education: Prevention of behavior problems; supporting students with emotional and behavioral disorders in schools; evidence based educational practices that effectively support our youth; school-wide positive behavior supports; motivational strategies; classroom and behavior management; alternative education; leadership and policy.
2. Social issues:  Race, gender, poverty, urban issues and struggles, nutrition and shelter, economics, political advocacy.
3. Psychology: Assessment; multi-systemic approach in schools, trauma, mental health, effective interventions and therapies, interagency collaboration; bullying.
4. Criminal Justice:  Advocacy and politics; juvenile justice procedures and processes; effective courts; social supports
