ATA's Share the Road Program Holds High School Demo
Highway Safety Tour Educates Virginia Students at Woodson High School
FAIRFAX, Va., May 17, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, American Trucking Associations and ATA's Share the Road Highway Safety Program visited Woodson High School in Fairfax, Va. to educate students on how to safely share highways with tractor-trailers.
"Today's events are a great example of the types of community outreach that ATA takes part in with support from schools and law enforcement agencies nationwide," said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves. "We have dedicated truck drivers in our industry who are committed to improving the perception of their profession and having a positive impact on highway safety."
Share the Road professional truck drivers used the Share the Road Mack Truck, a 2014 Mack Pinnacle sleeper model, to demonstrate blindspots to soon-to-be drivers after hosting a classroom discussion centered around the perils of distracted driving, speeding and following trucks too closely.
"Our message is always well-received, but it is certainly amplified when we have law enforcement and EMS agents adding their own experiences to our safety program," said professional truck driver Todd Stine, of Carbon Express Inc.
During the second phase of today's events, ATA's Share the Road professional drivers presented local Boy Scouts with their Truck Transportation Merit Badges, earned by completing their training in conjunction with truck drivers, law enforcement officers and Fairfax Fire and Rescue employees. To help the Boy Scouts achieve their merit badge, the Share the Road professional drivers educated the group about different facets of the trucking industry and explained the essentiality of trucking to their community.
