This year, Fix-a-Leak Week runs from March 17-22.

Petri said homeowners should look for leaks in and around their houses to make sure they avoid water damage, mold growth and rot.

"The Federal Emergency Management Administration has determined that a single inch of water from a leak can cause up to $25,000 in property damages," he said. "This shows that even small leaks can damage everything from drywall and flooring to furniture and electronics."

Petri suggests homeowners inspect their homes for leaks in the following:

• The toilet: Leaky toilets are the most common offenders. Homeowners can check for leaky toilets by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, waiting 15 minutes and then checking to see if any of the coloring has entered the bowl. If it has, it is time to replace the flapper.
• Their surroundings: Some leaks could be coming from pipes buried inside a home's walls. If homeowners see standing water on the floors or wet spots on the ceiling or walls, there is a chance a pipe is leaking within the walls. A professional plumber has the equipment to find the leak and repair it with minimal damage.
• Faucets: Check for dripping or leaking faucets in the kitchen and bathroom. Often, all that is needed to stop the leak is a new washer, but sometimes the faucet may need to be replaced.
• The water heater: Like HVAC systems, water heaters also need yearly maintenance. Homeowners who see a damp area near the water heater or aren't getting good water pressure may need to have their water heater serviced or replaced.
• Hoses and sprinklers: Make sure the home's exterior nozzles aren't dripping and pay attention to the grass. If the grass is thicker and greener in one area, the sprinkler system may have sprung a leak.
