The feature arrives as ADU growth hits record levels. California issued 41,831 ADU permits in 2025, an all-time high and a more than thirtyfold increase from the 1,336 permitted in 2016, with ADUs accounting for roughly a quarter of all new homes permitted statewide (California Department of Housing and Community Development Annual Progress Report data, as of the September 2026 release). In Los Angeles and San Francisco, more permits were issued for ADUs in 2025 than for all other forms of housing combined (Cotality, as of 2025). In Los Angeles County alone, a record 10,200+ ADUs were completed in 2025, accounting for 37 percent of the county's new housing (USC Lusk Center for Real Estate).
