Construction Underway on $36 Million JCP&L Project in Morris County
New Voltage-Regulating Equipment Will Help Enhance Service Reliability for Customers
MORRISTOWN, N.J., April 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is expanding a substation in Wharton, N.J., to accommodate new voltage-regulating equipment designed to help reinforce the electric system and enhance service reliability for customers.
The $36 million project includes the installation of specialized voltage-regulating equipment that responds to real-time electrical conditions, boosting or reducing voltage as needed to maintain consistent levels. This includes new capacitor banks, circuit breakers, transformers, communications equipment and a control building that will be installed at the substation as part of the project. The work is expected to be completed by September and will benefit more than 150,000 JCP&L customers in Hunterdon, Mercer, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties.
"Adding voltage support is just one of the things we do to maintain a reliable flow of power from one substation to another," said James V. Fakult, president of JCP&L. "With many of our customers using specialized equipment that is sensitive to voltage fluctuations, our new equipment is a cost-effective option to help maintain consistent voltage levels throughout our system."
The project is part of JCP&L's previously announced plans to invest $267 million in 2015 to enhance and maintain a strong electrical system and help meet future load growth.
