Context Labs Unveils Open Decarbonization Project with Major Ecosystem Leaders
Unlocking a New Era in Emissions Quantification and Transparency with Open-Source Technology
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- CERAWeek – Today, Context Labs, along with industry leaders, technology providers, and environmental organizations, announced the launch of the Open Decarbonization Project (ODP)—a groundbreaking, open-source initiative designed to advance transparency and trust in carbon and methane emissions reporting. By working together with industry leaders, the ODP is setting a new standard for science-based emissions quantification and reduction at scale.
At the core of the ODP is an inclusive and transparent repository of best-in-class methodologies, developed to help industries overcome a critical challenge: accurately capturing, verifying, and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Today, many companies rely on fragmented datasets and generalized government emissions factors, making it difficult to demonstrate real climate performance at an enterprise level. These limitations introduce inconsistencies, hinder decarbonization efforts, and create regulatory and financial risks.
To support this effort, Context Labs has contributed an Emissions Quantification Methodology under an MIT Open-Source License—a framework built on years of research and at-scale implementation with leading industry partners. As an AI-enabled carbon performance solution, this methodology ensures that companies can meet and exceed global emissions standards with transparent and credible data.
As an open-source initiative, the ODP fosters continuous peer review and improvement, integrating advanced scientific research and commercially available measurement technologies. By setting a new benchmark for emissions transparency, the ODP empowers organizations to build trust, mitigate risk, and accelerate their decarbonization strategies with confidence.
The ODP brings together various industry leaders, NGOs, and entrepreneurs to innovate and deliver transparency in emissions quantification, supporting a low-carbon future including Dell Technologies, EQT, Jonah Energy, KPMG, Kuva Systems, Microsoft, and Williams.
The first methodology contributed to the ODP delivers OGMP 2.0 Level 5 compliance and is already deployed by leaders in the energy sector, ensuring data transparency and verifiability, with independent expert validation. The ODP invites contributions from diverse stakeholders to further develop these methodologies.
