FirstEnergy Foundation Contributes $5,000 to Erie County Chapter of the American Red Cross
Funds Support Relief Following Tornado and Severe Storms
READING, Pa., July 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The FirstEnergy Foundation has contributed $5,000 to the American Red Cross Erie County Chapter to support relief efforts for residents affected by recent severe storms and a tornado in Erie and Crawford counties. FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) is the parent company of Pennsylvania Electric (Penelec) Company, which was particularly impacted by severe weather.
The storms slammed into the area – particularly Edinboro and Union City – on May 28, 2013, causing severe damage to buildings and homes. The storms and tornado also caused widespread power outages in portions of the Penelec territory.
"Penelec was a vital partner in the response efforts in Union City and continues to support the relief efforts through this donation," said Pam Masi, Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross Erie County Chapter. "We appreciate the company's dedication to the Red Cross mission through their Board leadership, financial support and volunteerism."
"Our company has a long-standing tradition of supporting the communities we serve," said Scott Wyman, regional president of Penelec. "Providing this timely grant to the local American Red Cross chapter will help those who are still recovering from the effects of the storm."
The FirstEnergy Foundation is funded solely by FirstEnergy Corp. and provides support to non-profit, tax-exempt health and human services agencies; educational organizations; cultural and arts programs and institutions; and civic groups in areas served by FirstEnergy's 10 electric operating companies and in areas where the company has facilities.
Penelec serves approximately 590,000 customers in 31 Pennsylvania counties.
FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company dedicated to safety, reliability and operational excellence. Its 10 electric distribution companies form one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric systems, serving customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York.
