Frost & Sullivan Honors Polaris Wireless with Enabling Technology Award in Location-Based Services Market
Hybrid solution powered by Polaris's Wireless Location Signatures technology, within the OmniLocate platform, enables superior location accuracy across all environments
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the location-based services (LBS) market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Polaris Wireless' Wireless Location Signatures (Polaris WLS™) location technology with the 2014 North America Frost & Sullivan Award for Enabling Technology Leadership. The Polaris WLS technology provides high-accuracy mobile location based on signatures derived from standard radio network measurements. In addition to high accuracy, other benefits include minimal power consumption on the handset (preventing battery drain), the ability to work on any mobile device, decreased hardware costs, and a quick time-to-first-fix (TTFF).
To support Frost & Sullivan's evaluation of the award recipient, Frost & Sullivan employs a customized Decision Support Matrix (DSM), which compares and measures criteria across multiple business and technology performance categories in the LBS market. The DSM is an analytical tool that compares companies' performance relative to each other with an integration of quantitative and qualitative metrics. The relative weighting reflects current market conditions and illustrates the associated importance of each criterion according to Frost & Sullivan. The research team then identifies the company with the highest ranking.
Many customers elect to deploy the Polaris WLS technology as a part of the OmniLocate platform. Polaris Wireless' OmniLocate is a carrier-grade location platform that wireless carriers can leverage to enable public safety, national security, and other commercial location-based services. The platform can be customized to support and manage various location determination methods and services based on a wireless carrier's unique requirements and strategic goals.
"Overall, the opportunity to combine complementary WLS and A-GPS technologies into a hybrid solution within the OmniLocate platform makes it possible for carriers to obtain superior location accuracy across a complete range of environments," noted Frost & Sullivan Mobile & Wireless Director Brent Iadarola. "As the correlation between enhanced location accuracy and ARPU becomes more tangible, the capabilities of Polaris's platform will increasingly resonate with wireless carriers."
The WLS technology provides accuracy of 50 meters or even less in dense urban areas, and has remarkable precision indoors as well, especially in challenging environments with Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), metro cells, pico/femto cells, etc. It is commercially deployed today in both universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) and global system for mobile communications (GSM) networks, and meets Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Phase II accuracy specifications. The technology is fully supported in Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks as well.
"Polaris's use of a standard API provides application developers access to location information, opening up new possibilities for a variety of innovative applications," said Iadarola. "The OmniLocate platform and associated WLS technology allow carriers to enhance the capabilities of existing services or add new applications that may, for example, require higher accuracy, indoor location, or a quicker TTFF."
Polaris currently has 25 deployments in the United States and 24 across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The WLS solution is available on all major cellular interfaces and works across all mobile devices and environments without any additional hardware, which enhances its market acceptance.
Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to a company that has developed a pioneering technology that not only enhances current products, but also enables the development of newer products and applications. The award recognizes the high market acceptance potential of the recipient's technology.
