Frost & Sullivan Honours CapsoVision for CapsoCam SV-1, its Game-changing Gastrointestinal Capsule Endoscope
CapsoCam SV-1 can be used across varied patient demographics as it offers a higher probability of accurate image capture for longer duration
LONDON, March 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the endoscopy devices market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes CapsoVision with the 2013 European Product Differentiation Excellence Award.
CapsoVision's CapsoCam SV-1, a small bowel capsule endoscope equipped with four cameras providing a 360° panoramic view of the bowel, is set to revolutionise the gastrointestinal endoscope market. Other available capsule endoscopes only show images across a 150° field of view.
CapsoCam SV-1 records and stores the data on-board, lowering the need for external recording harnesses, which is a must-have in conventional capsule endoscopes. It uses the smart motion sense technology which allows images to be captured only during capsule motion.
"When no motion is detected during the travel, the CapsoCam SV-1 enters the monitor mode, whereby images are captured, but not stored; this serves to reduce the redundancy of the images captured," said Frost & Sullivan's Program Manager for Medical Devices, Sowmya Rajagopalan. "This monitor mode also conserves power and extends the battery life for the product."
The quality of the images and the capsule's ability to capture all abnormalities are crucial for the success of the procedure. CapsoCam SV-1 captures 20 frames per second for the first two hours at a rate of 5 frames per second per camera and thereafter, 12 frames per second at a rate of 3 frames per second per camera. Competing capsule endoscopes can capture only 2 to 3 frames per second. This increase in frequency and number of images captured, as well as wider views, offer better visualization of the abnormalities, walls of the intestines and other layers.
The product also has 16 independently-equipped light emitting diodes (LEDs) for lighting. The light intensity decreases near the lumen and increases away from the lumen, thus providing optimal lighting for the capture of top quality images.
"The CapsoCam SV-1 capsule largely plugs the gaps in the first-generation capsule endoscopes, thus increasing its clinical effectiveness," noted Rajagopalan. "Interestingly, the product is also more affordable than conventional capsule endoscopes, which enhances its adoption prospects in the current straitened circumstances."
