Highmark and Noom collaborate to improve member health through behavior change and personalized support
Highmark to offer Noom: Weight Management to nearly 2 million eligible members beginning in 2026, with journeys for weight, diabetes prevention and diabetes
PITTSBURGH and LAS VEGAS, Oct. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Highmark today announced a collaboration with preventive health leader Noom to support health plan members through a whole-person health approach to weight management. By leveraging behavior change and habit formation techniques, personalized coaching and cutting-edge technology, Noom: Weight Management delivers a remarkable health experience designed to help members achieve their health goals.
With nearly 74% of U.S. adults overweight and obese costing the health system $173 billion annually, Highmark and Noom are combining resources to address one of the nation's most urgent health challenges.
"Highmark and Noom are both dedicated to building a world-class customer experience for the people we serve by engaging them when, where and how is best for them," said Tracy Saula, chief product and experience officer at Highmark Health. "Our members will find that Noom: Weight Management is customized to their unique needs and goals, guiding them toward implementing changes and ultimately sustaining a healthy routine."
After enrolling and completing an onboarding assessment, eligible Highmark members will be matched to the right Noom journey based on acuity level. The journeys within Noom: Weight Management can be personalized for those at risk of developing diabetes as well as those living with type 2 diabetes. All journeys offer bite-sized lessons, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart tools, one-on-one support and peer communities.
- Noom Weight is a proven digital program that helps members achieve and sustain a healthy weight through behavior change and lifestyle modification. For members who struggle to maintain progress or experience gradual weight gain, Noom's psychology-based lessons help members understand the "why" behind their habits, improve their relationship with food and reframe setbacks as part of the journey. AI-powered tools— including smart food logging, body scan technology and automated progress tracking—provide real-time insights that make healthy choices easier. Integration with wearables seamlessly captures activity, giving members a holistic view of their progress.
- Noom Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is designed to help members lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Noom is the first DPP to earn the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Full Plus Recognition, the highest designation for programs that demonstrate sustained engagement and strong clinical outcomes. Using a CDC-approved curriculum, Noom DPP educates members about diabetes risk factors and equips them with practical strategies to lower their risk. Noom DPP emphasizes healthy food choices, mindful eating and daily lifestyle habits that help regulate blood glucose levels and support long-term health.
- Noom Diabetes Lifestyle is a personalized lifestyle program that empowers members living with type 2 diabetes to take control of their health. The program combines diabetes-specific education with practical tools like food logging, medication tracking and connected blood glucose monitoring. By helping members understand how daily habits affect glucose levels, Noom Diabetes Lifestyle fosters healthier choices and builds the long-term skills needed to manage the condition with confidence.
Additionally, Noom's GLP-1 Companion is available to members across all journeys who self-report they are taking a GLP-1 medication. This feature offers customized content such as protein intake guidance, strategies to help retain muscle and information on managing side effects.
"Health is more than managing weight or a diagnosis—it's about creating lasting habits that support overall well-being," said Cody Fair, chief commercial officer at Noom. "Through our collaboration with Highmark, members will gain access to AI-powered tools like body scan technology and smart food logging, providing real-time insights, making healthier choices easier and helping drive sustainable long-term outcomes."
Obesity can increase a person's risk for hypertension, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease—with huge associated costs to the health care system. Studies have shown that weight loss of 5 to 10 percent can lead to clinically meaningful results and reduce the economic impact of costly comorbidities.
"Noom: Weight Management allows for members to focus on improving their daily lifestyle habits, providing them with the support they need for long-lasting change," said Susan Deakin, DO, medical director and vice president, Population and Curated Health at Highmark Health and Internal Medicine physician at Allegheny Health Network. "This proactive approach engages members earlier, meaning they are more likely to seek care before reaching a high acuity level, which is a key component of our Living Health strategy."
Nearly 2 million Highmark members are eligible for Noom: Weight Management as part of their medical benefits with no additional, out-of-pocket cost. Beginning January 1, 2026, members can confirm their eligibility by logging on to their My Highmark mobile app or web portal at myhighmark.com.
