PITTSBURGH, March 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Since 2004, Highmark has been bringing together local champions of health, dental and vision services to the community through its Partners for a Healthy Community events. A new season of "Partners" events will kick off with the first screening scheduled for Saturday, April 30 at the Hamilton Health Center in Harrisburg.

Additional events have been scheduled for Hanover, Chambersburg, York, Beaver Falls, Pittsburgh, Erie, Harrisburg, New Kensington and Lancaster from May through November. Preregistration is required to receive dental care, which can include fillings and extractions.

"Although children and adults often go without screenings and exams during challenging economic times, we believe preventive and corrective care measures are important to overall health," said Chuck Gladney, Highmark's director of community programs. "Through our Partners for a Healthy Community events, Highmark provides this free service in a number of  communities to help those in need take care of their medical and dental problems before they become even larger health concerns."

Each year, Highmark brings together United Concordia Dental, Davis Vision, Total Vision Care and Visionworks retail stores, as well as a variety of community partners to provide the screenings and services. Offerings may vary from location to location, but frequently include glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), breast health, depression, bone density and asthma. These events target uninsured or underinsured children and adults in the community.

The community health center locations that host these events provide an opportunity for participants to become regular patients and make those practices their medical "home" to receive care.
