Hotels: Detroit among priciest cities in the world, survey reveals
DETROIT, Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit has emerged as one of the most expensive cities in the world for hotel stays, according to a new survey by Cheaphotels.org.
The survey compared hotel rates across 100 destinations worldwide during October 2025 – the month when hotel prices in most cities tend to be at their highest. Only centrally located hotels with a 3-star rating or higher were considered.
Detroit ranked sixth globally overall, with average nightly rates of $240 for the most affordable available double room, putting it ahead of U.S. cities such as Washington DC, Austin and Chicago.
Topping the list is Boston, where travelers will have to spend an average of $375 per night for the cheapest double room. New York City follows at $338, while the Swiss capital of Zurich completes the podium at $274.
Several other U.S. destinations also feature prominently. Washington DC ranks just behind Detroit at $227, while Austin follows at $184. Chicago ($176) and San Diego ($175) also appear in the top 30. Major West Coast hubs Seattle ($164), Los Angeles ($158) and San Francisco ($134) are further down the list, along with Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Miami, New Orleans, Denver, and Orlando.
Rounding out the top ten are a mix of European cities including Milan, Paris, Rome, Vienna, and Amsterdam, continuing the trend of high hotel prices across popular European destinations.
At the other end of the spectrum, the least expensive city in the world is Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, where rooms average just $31 per night. Other affordable destinations include Doha, Manila, Bangkok, and Hanoi, all offering rates well below $50 per night.
