Island Doctors host "Diabetes Awareness Weekend" across NE Florida

Physician group attempts to bring communities together, promote disease awareness, and increase the quality of life of senior citizens living there.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla., Oct. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 12th and 13th, Island Doctors will participate, sponsor, and co-host three events in Putnam and St. Johns County, Florida.  The events are part of Island Doctors continued commitment to community diabetes awareness campaigns across NE Florida.

The Survivorship Celebration, in Palatka, FL, is geared towards cancer awareness and co-morbid disease awareness and prevention strategies.  Cancer awareness programs will focus on breast and colon health, while onsite screening programs focus on lung and skin.  These programs and screenings are sponsored by the Florida Radiation and Oncology Group (FROG).   Island Doctors will focus on co-morbid conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, and body mass index.

The Community Health Fair, in St. Augustine, FL, will focus primarily on diabetes awareness, treatment and prevention.  Complimentary services offered to participants at this event include:  blood pressure, glucose, BMI, and cholesterol screenings. 

The Community Fair will be located at the Boys and Girls Club of NE FL- THE PLAYERS Championship Unit (555 West King Street. St. Augustine, FL 32084).   The Survivorship Celebration is located at 600 Zeagler Drive, Palatka, FL 32177.  Both events are on Saturday, October 12, from 10a-2p. 

Island Doctors' Diabetes Awareness Weekend will finale on 11am, Sunday, October 13, 2013 at St. Paul AME Church (85 MLK Drive, St. Augustine, FL 32084).  An hour of inspiration will be given by Readus C. Smith, III , CEO, Community Health Initiative.  A reception will follow the service.
