Jackson Hewitt® Applauds Findings of New Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC) Report
PARSIPPANY, N.J., July 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. ("Jackson Hewitt"), the nation's second largest tax preparation firm, applauds the findings recently published by the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee ("ETAAC") in its 2012 Annual Report to Congress, which continue to benefit U.S. taxpayers. ETAAC is focused on serving individual taxpayers by advising the IRS on a wide range of electronic tax administration issues.
The ETAAC report highlights the achievement of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) goal of receiving 80 percent of all individual tax returns (from the 1040 group) via electronic filing during 2012. The 80 percent electronic filing goal for individual taxpayers has been a focus of the IRS and ETAAC since the group's formation in 1998. As a specialist in e-filing (IRS e-file), Jackson Hewitt encourages taxpayers to consider this method of filing for its many benefits, including speed, data security, accuracy of information and confirmation of receipt.
Included in the ETAAC findings were recommendations aimed at reinforcing tax industry standards for security, privacy, fraud prevention and e-authentication for the tax filing process. Additionally, the report acknowledged the difficulties that occur when tax changes are made late in the year – a situation that may take place for the 2012 tax year. It also highlighted an increase in the scope and volume of tax fraud, as well as a heightened level of sophistication and complexity in the kinds of cases being seen.
According to Mark Steber, chief tax officer of Jackson Hewitt and ETAAC chairman (2011-2012), "the ETAAC report is one of several published reports, including the recently released IRS Oversight Board Report and the Taxpayer Advocate Mid-Year Report, that communicate insight and guidance regarding the current state and future direction of the tax industry. The recommendations in these reports, which are available to the taxpaying public and industry stakeholders, are designed to not only to protect taxpayer data, but also to make U.S. taxpayers more comfortable and confident in sharing important financial information, especially through electronic methods.
"We congratulate the IRS and industry for reaching the 80 percent electronic filing goal and for the continued focus on implementing standards and improving the taxpayer experience," said Philip H. Sanford, president and chief executive officer of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. "We also congratulate our colleague and ETAAC Chairman, Mark Steber, and the entire ETAAC team, for volunteering their time and guidance in helping to prepare this important report."
