LAS VEGAS, April 21, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of Earth Day, Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) proudly announces that more than 26,000 individual green actions were completed by its team members during the company's annual "I Will If You Will" (IWIYW) global challenge. Initiated by Sands ECO360, Las Vegas Sands' global sustainability program during the week leading up to Earth Hour on March 19th, the challenge encouraged the company's team members to take action to reduce their impact on climate change.
"I am extremely proud of the participation we had from our team members this year," said Katarina Tesarova, vice president of global sustainability for Las Vegas Sands. "The challenge was a fun and effective way to demonstrate that by taking small actions, individuals really can make a positive impact on the environment," continued Tesarova. "Team members shared pictures of themselves taking action such as using alternative transportation, reducing water use, or switching off their lights for Earth Hour. I'm confident that they will continue to incorporate these habits into their daily lives."
Team Members were provided with a list of actions that they could take to "Change Climate Change." Some of the options were:
- Take public transportation/bike/walk to work
- Turn off your lights during Earth Hour
- Change out less efficient incandescent and fluorescent lights with LED lighting
- Wash clothes in cold water
- Adjust thermostat for efficiency
- Take an educational Sands ECO360 quiz
- Unplug electronics when not in use
- Submit a "green" efficiency idea for use at the property
At Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, 8,677 green actions were completed. One example of a collaborative effort was 140 team members working together to plant trees on the rooftop of the Sands Expo and Convention Center to make the property greener. One mature tree can supply a person with enough oxygen for two years while consuming up to 48 pounds of CO2 for each of those years, benefiting both the environment and overall air quality.
Team members at Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania finished over 934 green actions. 16 Green Committee volunteers set up a booth near the dining room for team members to take an educational Sands ECO360 quiz. Everyone that participated was given an LED lightbulb. LED lightbulbs generally use 80% less energy compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.
In Macao, team members from all Sands China Ltd. properties – Sands Macao, The Venetian Macao, The Plaza Macao featuring Four Seasons, and Sands Cotai Central including The St. Regis, Conrad, Sheraton and Holiday Inn participated in the event, delivering more than 3,200 actions.
At The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, 13,699 actions were recorded. To celebrate completing the most actions among any of our operating regions, Pete Boyd, senior vice president of operations will deliver on his promise to jump into the Grand Canal at The Venetian at the end of April to fulfill his part of the IWIYW challenge.
LVS is deeply committed to environmental stewardship through the work of the Sands ECO360 Global Sustainability Program, which focuses on sustainable buildings and development, as well as reducing the impact of the company's business operations on the natural environment. The program integrates best practices in sustainability across all company properties and serves as a roadmap for continuous improvement on environmental performance.
The company's official blog, Sands Confidential, will recap the challenge in greater detail, highlighting various team members completing green actions during the week of the challenge.
