And it is not only the sensation of having anal sex that varies but also the various set of notions attached to it that vary from one person to the other. Whether a pro or newbie to anal play, male or female, the difference in the expectations, prep work and experiences can be quite distinct. Using a survey, LELO interviewed almost nine thousand people with a variety of questions about their thoughts and experiences with anal sex. 

Society has become more sex-positive overall in the past decade, and anal sex - talking about it at least—has become significantly less taboo. But, even with all the talk, having anal sex still remains controversial. Especially among women and cisgender men. Even certain AI chatbots find it "inappropriate" to talk about anal sex. Just ask them and see.

A portion of straight men still observes anal sex through the miasma that anal sex is something that only homosexual men enjoy. It could not be further from the truth. At the same time, women have come a long way since the nineties and the spirit best embodied by the Sex and the City character Charlotte York and her almost legendary quote about the Up-the-bum girl. They are more freely talking about it and more and more seem really interested in it. Google trends for "female anal sex" search reveals a steady interest in the topic (number of searches). It is even more interesting to see some of the related searches in the top five. Alongside the ones you would expect to find on the topic, there are the ones devoted to the best anal sex toys for women and does anal feel good for women.

How do Americans feel about anal sex?

According to the survey carried out by LELO in the US, 40% of participants actually have anal sex while 42.8% do not engage in anal sex. Interestingly, the same number of people as those who do not engage in anal say they are interested but anxious about it (42.8%). One in three people would not even consider it, with 12% saying they are not even sexually active and therefore are not considering it.

• As mentioned above, many are interested in anal but their concerns outweigh their curiosity. A quarter of those not having anal would try it, but their partner is not into it, and 21% are too scared to even bring it up to their respective partners because of the stigma.
• Of those who have anal, the reasons for having it vary even more than those who avoid anal play. Exactly half of those surveyed do it to increase the level of intimacy in their relationship, while 43% believe they will experience more physical pleasure. 29% will try everything once and 58% want to please their partner.
• Even though most refrain from having anal because it is still taboo, one in three get a thrill from the feeling that it is taboo. 
• 57% like the feeling it arouses coupled with other kinds of stimulation, 48% are into anal because the orgasms are more intense; while 32% say they can only orgasm through anal.
• Sex toys are a great way to explore your or your partner's derrière, still only 22% use them for anal play, a whopping 58% do not use anal toys, and only 16% of them plan to try them.
• There are numerous reasons why people do not use toys for anal play, but the most common one is fear of the pain (33%).
• Those who have tried anal have predominantly tried anal with penis (38%) being used for penetration, followed by partner's finger (24%) and 22% used a sex toy - 71% using a dildo, with 53% using butt plugs and/or anal beads.
• When stigma concerning anal sex is considered, participants in the survey think it equally affects all - almost 24% think it equally affects men and women, 24% think it affects men more and 20% think it affects women more. When asked what in their opinion would destigmatize anal, 37% think it is education on the topic. 31% think that even more talk in the media would do the trick, and 31% think that sexual wellness brands would contribute to this by adding more anal toys to their portfolio.
• Surprisingly, and perhaps even worryingly a bit, 37% do not think there is anything that can be done on the matter and that anal will always stay stigmatized.
