AMITYVILLE, N.Y., Dec. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NAPCO Security Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSSC), one of the world's leading suppliers of high-performance electronic security equipment for over 30 years, shared today that its professional product lines, including NAPCO Security & Fire, Alarm Lock, Continental Access and Marks USA brands, incorporate all the attributes cited as the most effective in deterring residential and commercial burglaries according to a groundbreaking study.

The comprehensive study entitled, "Understanding Decisions to Burglarize from the Offender's Perspective," was conducted by the University of North Carolina, Charlotte and funded by the Alarm Industry Research and Education Foundation (AIREF). It reports on the criminal mind by providing "the decision-making processes of 422 randomly selected, incarcerated male and female burglars across North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio. About half the respondents reported engaging in residential burglary, while 31 percent committed commercial burglaries."

Richard Soloway, Chairman and President of NAPCO commented, "This study shows a strong correlation that premises with alarm systems sustain less incidence of burglary. Since only about 22% of the population possesses an alarm system, the growth of residential alarms should be very strong as people become increasingly aware that alarm systems deter criminals, as demonstrated by this study. And for the second consecutive year, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced that property crime rates rose for U.S. residents in 2012. Both of these reports reflect the increasing need for sophisticated security systems."

Mr. Soloway continued, "It is gratifying to know that NAPCO's security technology incorporates features that are a deterrent in thwarting criminal acts and that safeguard millions of homes, businesses, institutions and people around the globe. Our full line of integrated, advanced technology and reliable, high quality systems gives NAPCO a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The Company's launch of the residential iBridge® Connected Home Suite of Services which integrates security, locking, video, temperature and lighting control via Z-Wave and WiFi technologies offer advanced security and optional "look-in" security video. Our integrated enterprise commercial offering from Continental Access, the CA3000 v2.9, combines interoperable access control, locking, intrusion/fire alarms and video."

The UNC-Charlotte study published in The Mirror, volume XXII, June 2013, finds that "the majority of burglars considered the presence of deterrents such as alarms, outdoor cameras and other surveillance equipment when choosing a potential residential or commercial target. Approximately 83 percent of the offenders said they would attempt to determine if an alarm was present before attempting a burglary, and 60 percent said they would seek an alternative target if an alarm was installed. And, among those who discovered the presence of an alarm while attempting a burglary, half reported they would discontinue the attempt, while another 31 percent said they would sometimes retreat. Only 13 percent said they would always continue the attempt even after an alarm had been discovered. The presence of video surveillance was also an effective deterrent. Nearly 60 percent of the burglars said they would consider the presence of cameras or other video equipment when selecting a target and more than 40 percent said that would be a factor in prompting them to choose another target."
