Highlighting Beekeepers Who are Putting in the Work
Hilary Kearney, the San Diego-based beekeeper behind Girl Next Door Honey, continues her partnership with the National Honey Board to support the Honey Saves Hives campaign by giving a behind-the-scenes look at her day-to-day as a beekeeper.
"My profession as a beekeeper provides me with a front-row seat to the incredible role honey bees and honey play in our ecosystem," says Kearney. "I'm proud to use my experience to educate consumers about honey production and to inspire them to support pollinator health as part of the Honey Saves Hive program."
The National Honey Board recognizes beekeepers as the honey industry's backbone through its Celebrating Beekeeping video series. Each video in the series takes viewers around the world to showcase the humanity, hard work, and craft behind honey production.
Saving Honey Bees Begins at Home
To inspire at-home cooks of all culinary levels, Honey Saves Hives is coming to your local Walmart aisle. Shoppers across the country will learn about honey bees' relationship to the food industry through videos on bakery department screens and in-store demonstrations the weekends of September 5th and 19th, featuring the sweet and versatile taste of honey with a specially developed recipe from Walmart's test lab.
To further inspire the home cooks, the NHB teamed up with bestselling cookbook author Carolina Gelen to share easy and approachable recipes that incorporate honey into daily meals, inspiring consumers to explore honey's culinary potential.
"Honey will elevate any recipe," says Gelen. "The all-natural sweetener can uplevel any dish – sweet or savory, simple or sophisticated. Honey's versatility and flavor make it a staple in my recipes, and that's why I'm so proud to lend my voice to the National Honey Board's Honey Saves Hives campaign. It feels good to do what I love in the kitchen while supporting the honey bees."
And for those who do their grocery shopping elsewhere, food and beverage brands committed to supporting honey bees and incorporating honey into their products can be found among the aisles of their local grocery store. Honey Saves Hives partners, Justin's, Just Ice Tea, Bachan's, Frönen, Kate's Real Food, Barr Hill by Caledonia Spirits, and Sprecher feature honey in their products and continue to raise awareness about the important relationship between using honey and honey bee health.
Restaurant Menus Flowing with Honey
Supporting honey bees can start at home and extend to the choices we make while dining out. From September 20-21, the NHB will host an exclusive, one-weekend honey takeover at Time Out Market New York food hall where honey will be reimagined. Top New York chefs will challenge themselves to curate a diverse menu of sweet, savory, tangy, and delectable dishes – all featuring honey. This immersive food experience will celebrate honey's role in cuisine while educating on the importance of pollinators by the plateful.
For those outside of New York City, distilleries, breweries and bakeries across the country will feature honey on their menus in celebration of National Honey Month.
