New Cultural Care Au Pair Survey Reveals the Hidden Costs of Childcare

Comparable, Cost-Effective Option Goes Overlooked as Americans Take on Debt & Make Lifestyle Tradeoffs to Afford Care

BOSTON, Aug. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- New survey results released today by Cultural Care Au Pair, the largest designated sponsor of the U.S. State Department-regulated au pair program, show that the cost of childcare is reshaping far more than the budgets of American families. The survey reveals that, for most parents, childcare costs affect virtually every aspect of family finances – from career to housing decisions – and awareness of cost-effective, flexible childcare options is low.

Key Findings:

• More than half (55%) of parents say childcare costs affect their ability to save money, and more than four in ten (42%) report cutting back on lifestyle spending to afford childcare. For a large share of American families, childcare costs are shaping career decisions, housing options, and choices about whether to have more children.

• Middle-income families carry a disproportionate debt burden from childcare costs. Among households earning $75,000–$99,000, 32% say childcare has forced them to take on debt — a higher rate than both lower-income families (22%) and those earning $150,000 or more (16%).

• Career sacrifice from childcare costs is not solely a women's issue, and it disproportionately compounds for hybrid workers. Parents in dual-income households report identical rates of career impacts due to childcare. Hybrid workers report the highest career impact of any group (36%), compared with 27% of fully in-person and 23% of fully remote workers.

• The more parents know about au pairs, the more they signal interest in hosting an au pair. The survey suggests the biggest barrier to hosting an au pair isn't cost or interest – it is awareness. Among parents who are familiar with the program, 85% are open to hosting.

Childcare Costs Affect Every Corner of Daily Life

When asked which areas of their finances have been affected by childcare costs, parents highlighted aspects well beyond routine finances. For many families, the price of care is reshaping long-term financial security, professional ambitions, and major life decisions. Nearly one in three parents (29%) say childcare costs have influenced career choices, from cutting hours to stepping away from work altogether – and the pressure is not falling on mothers alone.

Parents in dual-income households report career impact at identical rates (31% each). Working parents with hybrid schedules, the fastest-growing segment of the workforce, feel these impacts most acutely at 36%. With growing remote work opportunities, the tension between work flexibility and childcare rigidity is likely to continue – making flexible options like an au pair vital.

A Disproportionate Squeeze on the Middle

The financial strain of childcare is especially prevalent for middle-income families. Among households earning $75,000–$99,000, nearly a third (32%) have taken on debt to pay for childcare, the highest rate of any income group.

These same families are among the most likely to feel childcare costs affecting both their careers and their family-planning decisions at once, forcing them to make consequential life trade-offs as a direct result of the price of care.

A Cost-Effective Option Hiding in Plain Sight

Despite many families feeling the strain of expensive or inflexible childcare, the survey found many are unaware of an alternative. Among parents currently relying on a nanny, only 27% believe an au pair would cost about the same or less. Of those who are daycare users, just 30% believe the same, despite au pair being able to offer comparable one-on-one, in-home care at a potentially lower cost.

Notably, the biggest barrier to consideration is not cost itself but cost uncertainty. Parents who are unsure how care options compare are far less open to an au pair (34–40%) than even those who assume it would cost more (78–83%). Au pairs cost the same regardless of how many children are in the home, and host families typically find the cost of hosting an au pair to be comparable or even less expensive than daycare or nannies. The real divide is between families who know the program and those new to it. Among parents who are very familiar with the au pair program, 85% are open to hosting.

An au pair is a young adult (18–26) who lives with an American family and provides up to 45 hours of childcare per week as part of a cultural exchange. Regulated by the U.S. Department of State, au pairs come from other countries on a legal visa, and share their language and culture while experiencing life and taking classes in the U.S.

Parents who host au pairs aren't only benefitting from a flexible, cost-effective childcare option, they find care that fits to their home's unique needs and introduce a new part of the world to their family. Au pairs bring their diverse languages, rich traditions, and fresh perspectives right into the homes of American host families, broadening children's outlooks and sparking curiosity about the world around them.

Methodology

Findings come from survey responses from 618 parents with childcare needs for between 2 and 5 children. The survey was authored by Cultural Care Au Pair and fielded from April to May 2026.
