"Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-ion Batteries in the Home" — the theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign — works to better educate the public about the potential fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. A total of 4,782 Fire Prevention Week toolkits will be distributed by State Farm in 48 states, featuring a host of resources that promote the campaign, including brochures, magnets, posters and more that fire departments will hand out at schools, open houses, and other community events.
"The proactive support we receive from State Farm each year strengthens our ability to reach the public with critical fire safety messages," said Kelly Ransdell, director of public education at NFPA. "We're incredibly grateful for their ongoing generosity and commitment to increased fire safety, particularly in homes, where the majority of U.S. fire deaths occur each year."
Most of the electronics in our homes — smartphones, tablets, power and lawn tools, laptops, e-cigarettes, headphones, and toys, to name just a few — are powered by lithium-ion batteries. Ransdell says that working with State Farm in support of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign will help reach as many people as possible with the campaign's key messages, including how to buy, charge, and recycle lithium-ion batteries safely.
"Helping people manage the risks of everyday life is a fundamental part of our mission," said Rasheed Merritt, assistant vice president of Corporate Responsibility at State Farm. "Through our collaboration with NFPA and local fire departments, we are actively getting timely information to the public that can help reduce their risk to home fires."
NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week — an annual public awareness campaign that works to reduce the public's risk to home fires — for more than 100 years.
