BRIGHTON, Mich., Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Providing long-term care (LTC) doesn't have to be an overwhelming experience. Unfortunately, many families often don't discuss care options for loved ones until care is needed – which can lead to hasty decisions and limited care options that impact the entire family's financial, emotional, and physical health.
November is Long-Term Care Awareness Month (LTCAM) in Michigan to raise awareness of the care needed by individuals who require ongoing assistance with daily living activities due to a physical or cognitive disorder and to encourage families to plan ahead for potential LTC needs.
"Too many families underestimate the importance of planning ahead and only discuss long-term care needs following a health crisis, which can be very costly," said Tiffany Albert, president and CEO of LifeSecure Insurance Company. "Without a plan, caregiving and providing long-term care can be overwhelming and take a major toll on the physical, emotional and financial health of entire families. Our message to families is to plan ahead and learn how you can be better prepared to handle the impact of long-term care."
Most people who reach age 65 will require some form of long-term care during their lifetime. Going without a LTC plan severely limits one's options for choosing where care is received. It can also erase a lifetime of savings and take a major toll on a caregiver's health, family relationships, and career, especially for women. The average duration of LTC need is three years. In Michigan, the average cost of a combination of in-home care and nursing home care for three years is $245,000, according to a recent study.
Since 2007, LifeSecure has worked with the Governor's Office to designate November as LTCAM. By supporting LTCAM, LifeSecure is continuing its mission to advocate for proper LTC planning and the importance of finding solutions that work best for families.
