Paralyzed Veterans of America presents Highmark with "Unstoppable" Award at Washington D.C. ceremony
Award recognizes support of the recent National Veterans Wheelchair Games
PITTSBURGH, Oct. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Highmark Inc. has received the second annual "Unstoppable Award" from Paralyzed Veterans of America at a gala event last evening in Washington, D.C. The annual event honors extraordinary leaders who help the nation's paralyzed veterans and their families, and it highlights the vital role their programs have in improving the quality of life for veterans with disabilities.
The national Unstoppable Award recognizes companies and organizations for their comprehensive support of Paralyzed Veterans and the National Veterans Wheelchair Games. Last year's award was presented to the U.S. Department of Defense.
"The Unstoppable Award is well named for this year's winner because Highmark has a longstanding track record in supporting initiatives that empower veterans and all people with disabilities," said Homer S. Townsend, Jr., executive director of Paralyzed Veterans of America. "We honor them for their generous support of the Wheelchair Games and their commitment to rehabilitative sports and recreation programs."
In addition to a significant financial contribution in Jan. 2011 to welcome national organizers to the city and kickoff planning for the Pittsburgh Games, Highmark provided volunteers, in-kind and financial contributions and general spirit to the Aug. 1-6 event.
"As a national host of the Pittsburgh games, we were delighted to be involved in every aspect of support of the national, state and local organizers by providing more than 300 employee volunteers, and contributing our specially created 'rally towels' and signs used by fans in the stands," said Michael G. Warfel, Highmark's vice president of government affairs. "Highmark leadership promoted the games in the community and inspired other corporations to support the cause. With Highmark's comprehensive commitment, we have set an example of how important local community support is to the overall success of the games."
