WILLIAMSPORT, Md., April 14, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), continues to conduct tree trimming work in communities across its service area in western Maryland and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia to help enhance service reliability.
Potomac Edison expects to spend approximately $36 million in 2015 to trim trees and control vegetation along more than 2,600 miles of power lines. The work is done to help maintain proper clearances around electrical equipment and help protect against tree-related outages.
"The tree trimming we have done over the past several years has made a noticeable difference in reducing the number of tree-related outages," said James A. Sears, Jr., president of FirstEnergy's Maryland Operations and vice president of Potomac Edison. "Between 2011 and 2014, our trimming program helped reduce both the number of tree-related outages and the number of Potomac Edison customers impacted by a tree-related outage by about 40 percent. With this year's tree trimming program, we intend to further enhance service reliability for our customers."
All tree trimming work is conducted by Potomac Edison's certified forestry contractors, including: Asplundh Tree Expert Company, Jaflo, Inc., The Energy Group, Inc., Penn Line Service, and Wright Tree Service.
Potomac Edison works with municipalities to inform them of tree trimming schedules. In addition, customers living in areas along company rights-of-way also are notified prior to vegetation management work being done.
During the upcoming months, Potomac Edison will be conducting tree trimming work in the following counties and communities:
- Allegany – Cumberland, Frostburg, LaVale, Old Town
- Berkeley (WV) – Hedgesville, Martinsburg
- Frederick – Braddock Heights, Buckeystown, Frederick, Middletown
- Garrett – McHenry, Oakland, Oak Park
- Grant (WV) – Dorcas, Petersburg
- Hampshire (WV) – Augusta, Junction, Romney
- Hardy (WV) – Moorefield, Old Fields
- Jefferson (WV) – Kearneysville, Shepherdstown
- Mineral (WV) – Keyser, Fountain
- Washington – Fountainhead, Halfway, Hagerstown, Maugansville
The tree trimming is done on a five-year cycle in Maryland and West Virginia. Vegetation is inspected and trees are pruned in a manner that helps preserve the health of the tree, while also maintaining safety near electric facilities. Trees that present a danger or are diseased may also be removed.
