Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox Announces Election Of Largest Director Class In Firm History
WASHINGTON, Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Intellectual property law firm Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. is proud to announce that Richard D. Coller III, Nirav N. Desai, Jeremiah B. Frueauf, Jonathan M. Strang, Jonathan Tuminaro, Ph.D. and Dennies Varughese, Pharm.D. have been elected to the directorship, effective January 1, 2015. These six new directors make up the largest class in the firm's history.
- Richard D. Coller III is a director in the Mechanical Group. He focuses his practice on conducting complex contested proceedings at the USPTO, providing opinions of counsel, and obtaining patent protection for cutting edge technologies in the medical device and consumer products arenas. Coller is particularly skilled at identifying portfolio strengths and weaknesses and providing strategic advice on portfolio development and management. Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Coller worked as a biomedical engineering university research assistant focusing on the design and testing of surgical implants and the development of biosensors for medical and counter-terrorism applications. Coller received his J.D., cum laude from the University of Minnesota and his B.S. cum laude in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University.
- Nirav N. Desai is a director in the Litigation Group. He represents clients in a wide range of technology in district court, before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and at the Federal Circuit. Throughout his legal career, Desai has handled cases involving computer hardware and software, semiconductors, RFID, networking devices, power systems, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals, among others. Desai also has experience counseling clients in intellectual property strategy, including patent portfolio development and analysis, licensing, and freedom to operate. Before his legal career, Desai worked in the private sector as a software engineer and systems analyst with a focus on developing biometric information systems for various government agencies including the Department of Justice and the FBI. Desai obtained his J.D. from The College of William and Mary, where he was a member of the William and Mary Law Review. He earned his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
- Jeremiah B. Frueauf is a director in the Biotechnology/Chemical Practice Group and counsels domestic and international clients on the worldwide procurement, protection, and enforcement of patents. He is experienced in counseling clients on evaluating intellectual property, including freedom-to-operate, due diligence, validity, infringement, and patentability analyses, and identifying and implementing strategies for licensing, challenging, designing-around, and securing a competitive advantage over competitor technologies. Frueauf's experience includes representing clients in various inter partes matters, including district court litigation, Section 337 investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission, and patent office litigation. Frueauf received his J.D from Georgetown University, his M.S. in Biochemistry from Michigan State University and his B.S. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from Ohio University, where he graduated summa cum laude.
- Jonathan M. Strang is a director in the firm's Litigation Group. He focuses his practice on representing technology clients before the courts and the United States Patent & Trademark Office. To his legal practice Strang brings broad practical experience including clerking in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Federal Claims, serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy Submarine Force as a nuclear and electrical engineer and in the private sector leading various systems and software development efforts. Strang earned his J.D. magna cum laude from George Mason University where he was the Executive Editor of the Federal Circuit Bar Journal. He earned his B.S. in Computer Engineering, summa cum laude from Auburn University.
- Jonathan Tuminaro, Ph.D., is a director in the Litigation Group. He focuses his practice on complex patent litigation matters in the U.S. district courts, the ITC, and the Patent Office. He has handled cases spanning a wide range of technologies, including 4G wireless communications, hand-held devices, billing systems, controlled-release pharmaceuticals, in vivo imaging, and virtual machines. Tuminaro also has experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a variety of technical fields. To his legal practice, Tuminaro brings extensive academic study in electromagnetism, classical and quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, gravity theory, cognitive theory, and artificial intelligence. Tuminaro earned his J.D. from George Mason University, his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Maryland, his M.S. in Physics from University of Maryland, and his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics, from Canisius College, where he graduated magna cum laude.
- Dennies Varughese, Pharm.D., is a director in the Litigation Group and specializes in biotech and pharmaceutical patent litigation in district courts, and well as contested proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board at the Patent Office. Throughout his legal career, Dr. Varughese has handled cases involving a broad range of technologies in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological arts, including controlled-release polymers, hypoglycemic treatments, antilipidemic treatments, antimalarials, microfluidics, and in vivo imaging, among others. Dr. Varughese also has extensive experience counseling clients on FDA regulatory matters, early commercialization strategies, drug products liability, and antitrust issues bearing on pharmaceutical patent settlements. He earned his J.D. cum laude from Temple University, where he served as associate editor on the Law Review and was awarded the Barrister Award for excellence in trial advocacy, the Podwil Memorial Prize for excellence in intellectual property and the Matkoff Scholarship award. Dr. Varughese earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of the Sciences, Philadelphia and is a licensed pharmacist by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
