Students, Schools Win Scholarships, Grants at Goodyear's 19th Annual STEM Career Day

AKRON, Ohio, May 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty high school students were awarded college scholarships and another 45 shared in grants for their schools at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's 19^th Annual STEM Career Day. The scholarships and grants totaled $32,000.

Nearly 1,800 students attended the day-long weekend events, seeking to extend their understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Goodyear challenged students in grades 6 through 12 – to create the most deliberately over-engineered contraption (in the spirit of Rube Goldberg). High school machines were required to check the air pressure of a tire while middle school machines monitored tread depth. Ten teams, totaling 83 students from across northeast Ohio, accepted the call, with the winning teams sharing $11,000 in grants

The high school event offered students a glimpse into the college experience with a tour of The University of Akron's campus and STEM facilities, as well as mentoring sessions with professionals from a variety of industries and disciplines on next steps for pursuing a career in STEM. Students at both the middle and high school events interacted with representatives from more than 40 Northeast Ohio organizations, who hosted hands-on STEM-based activities throughout the day.

The following high schools won grants via the Rube Goldberg Machine Challenge:

• First place and Goodyear Associate Favorite, receiving $2,500 was Virtus Academy, Valley View, Ohio.
• Second place, receiving $2,000 was Lake High School, Uniontown, Ohio.
• Third place, receiving $1,000 was Westlake High School, Westlake, Ohio.

The following middle schools won grants via the Rube Goldberg Machine Challenge:

• First place and Goodyear Associate Favorite, receiving $2,500, was Catalyst Academy, Macedonia, Ohio.
• Second place, receiving $2,000 was NIHF STEM Middle School, Akron, Ohio.
• Third place, receiving $1,000 was Buckeye Intermediate School (Team 2),
  Medina, Ohio.

The following three students were awarded $2,500 scholarships:

• Greta Noeth of St. Joseph Academy, Cleveland, who will be attending The Ohio State University.
• Kevin Du of Copley High School, Copley, Ohio, who will be attending Brown University.
• Kyler Fertig of Akron STEM High School, Akron, Ohio, who will be attending The University of Akron.

The following 11 students were awarded $1,000 scholarships:

• Steven Prexta of Green High School, Green, Ohio, who will be attending The Ohio State University.
• Amanda Kimble of Stow-Munroe Falls High School, Stow, Ohio, who will be attending The Ohio State University.
• Drew DeLap of Lake High School, Uniontown, Ohio, who will be attending The Ohio State University.
• James Bradcovich of Lake High School, Uniontown, Ohio, who will be attending The Ohio State University.
• Lance Anenson of Green High School, Uniontown, Ohio, who will be attending The Ohio State University.
• Julia Zalewski of Roosevelt High School, Kent, Ohio, who will be attending Case Western Reserve University.
• Zeynep Ozgur of Hudson High School, Hudson, Ohio, who will be attending Kent State University.
• Mary Pat Nicodemus of National Inventors Hall of Fame S.T.E.M. High School, Akron, Ohio, who will be attending The University of Akron.
• Portia Snipes of National Inventors Hall of Fame S.T.E.M. High School, Akron, Ohio, who will be attending Ohio University.
• Camden Fisher of National Inventors Hall of Fame S.T.E.M. High School, Akron, Ohio, who will be attending Purdue University.
• Amariana Dortch of Firestone High School, Akron, Ohio, who will be attending The University of Akron.

The following four students were awarded $500 scholarships:

• Nicholas Luther of West Geauga High School, Chesterland, Ohio, who will be attending The University of Akron.
• Jared Ruehr of Aurora High School, Aurora, Ohio, who will be attending Northeastern University.
• Nicholas Koch of Holy Name High School, Brunswick, Ohio, who will be attending The University of Dayton.
• Matthew Lundell of Copley High School, Copley, Ohio, who will be attending North Carolina State University.
