MIAMI, 17 juin 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Une journée emblématique pour le prochain navire vedette de l'industrie des croisières a eu lieu le lundi 14 juin lorsque Royal Caribbean International a débuté la construction de son premier navire de la classe Icon. Pour célébrer cette étape importante, la plus grande compagnie de croisières au monde a organisé une cérémonie de découpe de la première tôle d'acier au chantier naval finlandais Meyer Turku, au cours de laquelle le nom de ce navire révolutionnaire a été dévoilé : « Icon of the Seas ».

Richard Fain, président-directeur général de Royal Caribbean Group, Michael Bayley, président-directeur général de Royal Caribbean International et Tim Meyer, président-directeur général de Meyer Turku, ont assisté à la cérémonie. Cette première étape du voyage de plusieurs années vers l'achèvement du navire marque également le début officiel du prochain chapitre pour la compagnie Royal Caribbean dans la construction d'un avenir à énergie propre en tant que leader dans la conception de navires innovants. Lancé à l'automne 2023, l'Icon sera le premier des trois navires de la compagnie de croisière à être alimenté au GNL (gaz naturel liquéfié). Le GNL et les autres caractéristiques écologiques du navire, telles que la connexion au réseau électrique terrestre, permettront d'améliorer l'efficacité énergétique et de réduire l'empreinte carbone. La Royal Caribbean est déjà connue pour ses dizaines d'années d'efforts en matière d'efficacité énergétique et de réduction des émissions grâce à des technologies telles que la lubrification à l'air, qui envoie des milliards de bulles microscopiques le long de la coque d'un navire pour réduire les frottements, et des systèmes avancés de récupération de la chaleur résiduelle qui transforment cette dernière en énergie supplémentaire, jusqu'à 3 mégawatts, pour aider à alimenter les opérations du navire. L'utilisation de ces technologies, dont le gaz naturel liquéfié, se traduira par davantage de réduction des émissions globales, une absence quasi totale d'émissions de dioxydes de soufre et de particules, et la réduction significative de la production d'oxydes d'azote.
