16 Outstanding Students Awarded 2016 Horatio Alger Trott Family Scholarship

WASHINGTON, May 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that 16 students will receive its 2016 Horatio Alger Trott Family Scholarship in amounts ranging between $30,000 and $60,000 each. These young men and women are recognized for their admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing adversity.

Deepening his commitment to the organization as Horatio Alger Association president, Byron D. Trott, a 2011 Member, established the $5 million Horatio Alger Trott Family Scholarship program to support high school seniors pursuing higher education at University of Chicago, The Ohio State University, and Vanderbilt University, three universities that are personally important to the Trott family. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be high school seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applicants should have critical financial need and must also demonstrate integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity. Applying for the Trott Family Scholarship will also give applicants immediate eligibility for the Horatio Alger National and State Scholarships.

"Education has been the foundation for all that I have accomplished in life, and I am committed to giving other young people the same opportunities that I had," said Mr. Trott. "So many promising young men and women in this country do not have access to the education they need to excel and pursue the American Dream. In establishing the Trott Family Scholarship, my family and I look forward to helping deserving young people overcome adversity and pursue higher education at the University of Chicago, Ohio State and Vanderbilt, as each of these institutions is important to our family."

The 2016 Horatio Alger Trott Family Scholarship recipients have maintained an average GPA of 3.9 and an average ACT score of 30, while coming from households with an average annual income of approximately $25,000.

Horatio Alger Association was founded in 1947, and since 1984, it has administered one of the nation's largest privately-funded, need-based scholarship programs. The Association has awarded more than $125 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships to students from across the United States (including all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) and Canada. In 2000, 16 years after the establishment of its National Scholarship Program, Horatio Alger Members began funding scholarships concentrated in each state to further the Association's mission of helping deserving young people pursue their collegiate goals.
