AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The FirstEnergy Foundation has donated $6,300 to send students from Akron and Cleveland on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad's Polar Express train ride December 1. Students also will receive a copy of the book, The Polar Express, before their trip to the North Pole.
The Akron students are all participants in the AkronReads Program, and the students from Cleveland participate in programs at Cleveland Division of Recreation facilities across the city.
"The Polar Express has become a signature holiday experience for children in Northeast Ohio," said Dee Lowery, president of the FirstEnergy Foundation. "We're thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity to more students in the region."
The trip includes a reading of the children's Christmas book, hot chocolate, cookies and a visit from Santa to each train car. The students are encouraged to wear their pajamas for the evening, and all on board will be invited to sing Christmas Carols.
AkronReads is dedicated to helping elementary students in the Akron Public Schools gain valuable academic opportunities by helping them to improve basic reading skills and fostering a love of reading. The program brings together corporate partners and volunteers to provide tutoring, positive support and one-on-one attention students may not otherwise get in a typical teaching environment.
The Cleveland Division of Recreation provides cultural, recreational and athletic experiences for all ages and interest groups. Recreational programs and swimming are free for City of Cleveland residents.
The FirstEnergy Foundation is funded solely by FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) and provides support to non-profit, tax-exempt health and human services agencies; educational organizations; cultural and arts programs and institutions; and civic groups in areas served by FirstEnergy's 10 electric operating companies and in areas where the company conducts business.
