"Healthy, active lifestyles are important to the modern woman, and Belk is proud to partner with The Heart Truth® for the opportunity to engage customers and associates in taking action for heart health," said Jon Pollack, Belk, Inc. executive vice president, sales promotion, marketing and e-commerce. "Our customers continue to be very supportive of Belk community initiatives, and we're excited to further expand our community involvement efforts to directly benefit the health and wellness of our primary customers – women."
Belk associates will be encouraged to share health and wellness success stories and challenged to aim for a healthy weight, to stop smoking and to participate in physical activity. Associates will observe National Wear Red Day on February 4 and share healthy heart tips with customers throughout the month. Each store will host activities and events designed to increase awareness of heart disease and how to prevent it. Customers will have the opportunity to make donations and receive shopping discounts. Belk's website, www.belk.com, and Facebook page will also feature information about risk factors, taking action, links to educational resources, in-store event and promotion information, and ways customers can donate.
All monies raised through Belk's in-store efforts will benefit the Foundation for the National Institute of Health in support of The Heart Truth® and women's heart health education and research.
Heart disease is the number one killer of American women but most fail to make the connection between risk factors – such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol – and their personal risk of developing heart disease. By doing just four things – eating right, being physically active, not smoking and keeping a healthy weight – women can reduce their risk of heart disease by as much as 82 percent.
