Historic Home of Governor Thomas Stanley to be Sold at Auction
ROCKINGHAM, N.C., Aug. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- It was announced today that the Stoneleigh Estate of former Virginia Governor Thomas B. Stanley will be on the Auction Block on September 27, 2014.
The Stoneleigh Estate was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It consists of 25 rooms and over 20,000 heated square feet. The Estate is located at 375 Edgewood Drive in Stanleytown, Virginia. It is a Tudor Revival style with fabulous gardens and scenic views overlooking the Smith River. Construction of the Estate was started in 1929 and completed in 1932. The gardens were redesigned in 1961 by renowned landscape architect Charles Gillette. The formal gardens were recently updated in the spring of 2014 by Chip Callaway, of Callaway and Associates. European Roses were placed in the gardens to suit the Estate by Witherspoon Rose Culture. Stoneleigh Estate was on the Historic Garden Week of Virginia tour in April of 2014.
The Firm of Iron Horse Auction Company, Inc. of North Carolina has been chosen to conduct this important auction marketing event. In addition to the home, a large volume of antiques that were placed in the home by the current owner will be sold. The antiques were purchased at the auction of Chinqua Penn Plantation in Reidsville, NC. Chinqua Penn was the residence of Betsy and Jeff Penn, the former owner of the Penn Tobacco Company and the Niagra Power Company.
The auction of the real estate will be conducted online only with a live ending at the property on Saturday, September 27th at 2pm. The personal property will be online only and will not have a live ending. It will end on September 25th at 1pm. Real estate inspections will be September 6th and 13th from 1pm to 4pm or by appointment. Personal property inspections will be September 10th and 22nd from 10am to 4pm.
