Horatio Alger Association Opens Applications for Its 2015 Scholarship Programs to High School Seniors Nationwide
The Association expects to award more than $10 million in college funding to outstanding students from across the United States who have overcome significant adversity and are determined to further their education
WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that applications are open for its 2015 scholarship programs. With the goal of awarding more than $10 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships in 2015, the Association operates one of the largest privately-funded, need-based financial aid programs in the country. Applications, for both national and state-specific scholarships, are now being accepted through October 25, 2014.
Through its robust scholarship programs, Horatio Alger Association supports high school students of exceptional character who demonstrate an admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing great adversity. Since 1984, more than 21,000 students, from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have received more than $100 million in scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies. Thanks to substantial fund advances in the Association's Investing in America's Future Campaign, which aims to fully endow its scholarships, Horatio Alger scholarship awards have increased by $1,000 increments since 2013 and will continue to grow until the goal of $250 million is reached, raising state scholarships to $10,000 and national scholarships to $25,000.
"Horatio Alger Scholarship Programs are core to our Association's mission," said Tony Novelly, president and CEO, Horatio Alger Association. "Our Members generously fund these scholarships, which range from $7,000 - $22,000, and are committed to advising these exceptional students as they personally mature and engage new academic pursuits. Our Scholars reflect the qualities heralded in Horatio Alger, Jr.'s 19th century novels, notably a strong belief that one can succeed in achieving the American Dream with hard work and opportunity. We are proud to open our scholarship programs for 2015 and look forward to rewarding students for their success and resilience."
Students interested in applying for Horatio Alger Scholarships must meet a series of requirements related to education, character and family income. Once chosen, Horatio Alger Scholars are provided with abundant resources to ensure a successful higher education experience, including financial aid guidance, access to guidance and crisis counselors, mentoring programs, tools to interact with other Scholars and manage the disbursement of funds, and access to educational staff for assistance with their scholarships.
