Deadline for Filing a 2010 Tax Return to Claim Refund Dollars Approaching on April 15

PARSIPPANY, N.J., March 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced that there are an estimated 918,600 taxpayers who have not filed their federal return for 2010, and therefore haven't claimed their refund. The IRS estimates that half the potential refunds for 2010 are more than $571. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service® is open and ready to help taxpayers who haven't filed a 2010 tax return get those returns filed.

"The time to act is now," explained Mark Steber, Chief Tax Officer, Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. "When the season ends on April 15, 2014, the chance to claim refund dollars from 2010 is gone. The IRS offers a three-year window for filing a federal tax return. If you've already filed and think you may have missed something, there's still time to have your return reviewed."

In addition to the money that taxpayers may be owed, they may also qualify for tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, which was worth as much as $5,666 in 2010, Child Tax Credit, and American Opportunity Credit. That money is just waiting to be claimed.

"This is your money and it will become property of the U.S. Treasury after April 15," added Steber.

For taxpayers who think that they had too little income to require filing, they should consider that they likely had money withheld from their employment that is now available to them as a refund. Taxpayers will not incur any late-filing penalty and will be able to receive their refund if they file a return by April 15, 2014.
