MORRISTOWN, N.J., June 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) will hold open houses June 24 and June 25 for its proposed $44.5 million Oceanview Reinforcement Project, which will build a new 230 kilovolt (kV) transmission line in Monmouth County to add redundancy to the system and meet the growing demand for electricity.
The new 230 kV transmission line is expected to be built between the existing Larrabee Substation in Howell and the existing Oceanview Substation in Neptune. The project is part of the JCP&L Local Infrastructure and Transmission Enhancement (LITE) Program, a $200 million, multiyear comprehensive reliability plan.
The project's preferred 16-mile route is expected to be built within the existing 230 kV transmission right-of-way corridor in Monmouth County through Colts Neck, Howell, Neptune, Tinton Falls and Wall.
To answer questions about the project, JCP&L will hold two open houses:
- On June 24, from 4-8 p.m., at Howell Township Middle School North, 501 Squankum-Yellowbrook Road, Farmingdale.
- On June 25, from 4-8 p.m., at the Sheraton Eatontown, 6 Industrial Way East, Eatontown.
JCP&L expects to file a petition for the Oceanview project with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities by December of this year. PJM Interconnection (PJM), the regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of electricity and oversees reliability in all or part of 13 states and the District of Columbia, has determined that the project should be built and has requested that the project be in service by June 2017. PJM's assessment is based on existing and projected system conditions and the potential for future demand on the system.
In the past decade, the demand for electricity in New Jersey has grown about three times faster than the population as homeowners use electricity to power everything from big-screen televisions to computer devices to the latest kitchen appliances.
