WILTON, Conn., Nov. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to atopic dermatitis, a chronic form of the skin condition known as eczema, Eucerin understands the effect flare-ups can have on families, especially when the affected family member is a baby or child. Based on a survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of eczema among children younger than 18 rose between 2000 and 2010: from approximately 9 percent to 17 percent among black children; from 5 percent to 10 percent among Hispanic children; and from approximately 8 percent to almost 13 percent among white children. With studies showing eczema on the rise, Eucerin worked hard to provide a solution for this common condition with its over-the-counter Eucerin Eczema Relief Line. Launched in 2013, the product line is specially formulated without steroids to strengthen the skin barrier and relieve skin irritation and itching due to eczema. Today, Eucerin – the skincare brand that ensures reliable and highly effective product innovations that adhere to the highest standards of dermatological science – announced the results of a new study proving just how much of an impact the Eucerin Eczema Relief products can have on babies and children battling eczema on a daily basis.
"We know the substantial impact atopic dermatitis can have on those who suffer from it, and that was the impetus for creating Eucerin's specialized Eczema Relief line," said Teresa M. Weber, Ph.D., R&D Beiersdorf Inc. "Through this study, we set out to prove that consistent use of these high-quality specially formulated products, Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Creme and Flare-Up Treatment Creme, actually works – and works well to reduce eczema flare-ups. Even better, the products are steroid-free."
The study, which specifically focused on Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Creme and Eucerin Eczema Relief Flare-Up Treatment resulted in reduced risk of flare, prolonged time to flare and effectively reduced eczema symptoms when flares occurred in pediatric subjects with eczema.
Study subjects included a 45 infants and children with an average age of about 3.5 years – all of whom had a confirmed history of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis and recurring eczema flares – and were flare-free at enrollment. The study protocol included three phases: Washout, Maintenance and Treatment. Results included:
- Fewer atopic dermatitis flares: Participants receiving daily applications of the Body Creme during the Maintenance Phase had fewer flares (21.1 percent) as compared to those who were in the control group (65.2 percent flared).
- Long-term results: After six months, 78.9 percent of the group receiving daily Body Creme applications remained flare-free, while only 34.8 percent of the control group were flare-free.
- Prolonged time-to-flare: The median time-to-flare was 28 days for the control group vs. >180 days for the group receiving daily Body Creme applications.
- Reduced Risk: Daily moisturization with Eucerin Eczema Relief Body Creme reduced the absolute risk of flare by 44.1 percent at six months.
