CHARLESTON, W.Va., Nov. 3, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Middle class workers in West Virginia scored a major victory Tuesday night with the election of Gov. Joe Manchin to the U.S. Senate, said Ken Hall, President of Teamsters Local 175 in South Charleston and International Vice President.

"Senator-elect Manchin is an outstanding leader who fights for working families," Hall said. "I am honored to call him a friend of the Teamsters Union and I am proud that he will represent all West Virginians in Washington as our senator."
Manchin will fill the seat of the legendary Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd, who died earlier this year as the longest serving senator in U.S. history.
As governor, Manchin has created good jobs and has helped West Virginia to maintain a strong, responsible government. He successfully fought for and signed historic mine safety legislation, which Congress later passed and implemented. As a result, about 1,400 new jobs were created to make equipment and materials for the new safety mandates.
"Senator-elect Manchin respects truck drivers and coal miners as professionals who keep our goods flowing and our electricity turned on," Hall said. "He is a man of the people who respects all workers and puts them first. His record speaks for itself."
