Tupai offers free AI maths apps for SPM season after one in five candidates failed mathematics last year

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- With SPM written papers eight weeks away, Malaysian education technology company Tupai (AI Teacher Sdn Bhd) is making its AI mathematics tutoring apps free to every student and family through the year-end examination season.

This move is a response to a difficult year for Malaysian mathematics. The SPM 2025 Examination Results Analysis Report found that 21.7% of candidates — more than one in five — did not pass Mathematics, the most commonly failed core subject. The OECD's PISA 2025 results, published on 8 September, showed Malaysian 15-year-olds' mathematics score falling 11 points from 2022, the only core domain to decline.

Behind the statistic are two moments Tupai often hears from families. The first belongs to the student: "SPM is in two months — and I haven't started studying." The second belongs to the parent: "I only found out my child was struggling with maths months later. I want to help my child progress — I want to be involved — but I haven't touched the syllabus in twenty years." Both apps were designed to catch the student in the moment of being stuck and to bring the parent into the picture while there is still time to act.

For the students sitting for SPM from 23rd November, and for every other student facing end-of-year assessments in the same window, these are the weeks in which practice matters more than fresh teaching — the last stretch in which a result can still change. Tupai would rather help every student during this period than hold access back for the ones who can pay.

Two apps for every family — how it works

Tupai 2.0 and the new Tupai Parent companion app were launched publicly on 19 September at The Sunway Library by BookXcess, Sunway Square, and are now available on Google Play, alongside the web version at tupai.ai; an iOS release follows later this year.

The student app is built for the moment a child is stuck: photograph any mathematics question and it explains the answer step by step — guiding rather than solving — with follow-up questions in a conversational back-and-forth, quick practice, and a dedicated SPM and exam-preparation module built on trial and past-year papers. Content is curriculum-aligned across KSSR Mathematics (Primary 4 to 6), KSSM Mathematics (Form 1 to 5) and Cambridge IGCSE, in English and Bahasa Malaysia. The Tupai Parent app shows parents which topics their child has mastered and where they are still stuck, and lets them assign practice or work through a topic together — an answer for the parent who wants to be involved.

Backed by results from its school communities

The two apps extend work Tupai already does on the ground. Its Tupai & Friends programme runs after-school peer-learning communities in schools across Peninsular Malaysia — small groups with weekly sessions and trained facilitators, where students explain concepts to one another and turn to the app when the group is stuck. The communities are deployed with the support of corporate foundations; Tupai is a named partner in Yayasan Sime Darby's YSD SEPAKAT initiative under Belanjawan 2026.

When students sat for assessments this September — the median score across eight communities, 256 students from Kelantan to the Klang Valley, rose from 36.5% to 54% when compared to their mid-term exams, with most communities improving. The figures are Tupai's own — teacher-administered, not independently audited, and excluding two communities whose programmes had run fewer than four sessions. At one Klang secondary school, the median rose from 38% to 77%.

With that, Tupai is inviting every family to benefit from the new apps ahead of end-of-year assessments and the SPM.
