Weihai Receives National Award for Excellence in Accessibility Development
BEIJING, Nov. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report from CRI Online:
Weihai has been recognized as an "Outstanding Contributor in Accessibility and Age-Friendly Renovation" for its achievements in building an inclusive urban environment. The award was presented at the 23rd China International Urban Construction Expo in Beijing, where the city showcased its progress in a dedicated exhibition on accessibility and aging-friendly design.
In recent years, Weihai has issued a series of policy documents, including the "Weihai Accessibility Environment Construction Plan (2024–2035)" and the "Implementation Plan for Building a National Demonstration City for Accessibility." These guidelines clearly define responsibilities, incorporate annual construction and renovation targets into key departmental tasks, and establish a coordinated, multi-stakeholder working mechanism.
On the ground, the city has enhanced accessibility along urban roads through projects such as the renovation of sidewalks along Haibin Road and Binhai Avenue. A total of 120 damaged or non-compliant accessibility facilities have been repaired. In addition, Weihai has promoted accessibility upgrades in residential communities and buildings, retrofitting 423 old residential quarters and installing 146 new elevators.
To date, all newly built and renovated roads, public transport facilities, residential communities, and public buildings in Weihai fully comply with national accessibility standards, placing the city at the forefront of urban accessibility development in China.
