SUZHOU, China, Sept. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Suzhou is only about 30 minutes from Shanghai by high-speed train, yet the pace feels noticeably slower. In the old city, canals run beside narrow streets and white-walled houses. A short walk can take you from a busy road to a quiet lane, a small bridge or a garden hidden behind a plain entrance.
Suzhou Media-verse, which promotes Suzhou to international visitors, has launched a new 72-hour itinerary covering the city's classic gardens and canals, local food, evening performances and the modern waterfront of Jinji Lake.
Start at the Humble Administrator's Garden. It is one of Suzhou's best-known sights, and it can be crowded, but the garden is still worth taking slowly. Walk around the ponds, pass through the covered corridors and look back at the pavilions from different angles. An early visit is more comfortable, particularly in the warmer months. Bring comfortable shoes as well: the paths are easy enough, but there is more walking than the map may suggest.
The Suzhou Museum, designed by I. M. Pei, is nearby. Its courtyards, pale walls and dark rooflines echo traditional Suzhou architecture in a distinctly modern way. It is not an enormous museum, which makes it a good follow-up to the garden instead of another half-day commitment.
By late afternoon, head towards Pingjiang Road. The canal-side street is at its most enjoyable when you are not trying to complete it from end to end. Follow the water, look into the smaller lanes and stop for a snack or coffee. The main stretch becomes busy around sunset, but the side streets often feel more relaxed. If you enjoy taking photos, you could also try a vintage-inspired hair and make-up session while you are here. A finger-wave hairstyle would not look out of place among the old houses, bridges and garden walls.
In the evening, catch a Pingtan performance if one fits your schedule. Pingtan is a local form of storytelling and music performed in the Wu dialect. You will not understand every line, but the intimate setting and distinctive singing style are enough to make it an interesting introduction to Suzhou. After a day of gardens and old streets, the smaller setting feels like a change of pace.
Day 2: A Market Morning and a Garden After Dark

Go to Shuangta Market in the morning, when local residents are buying breakfast and groceries. Vendors prepare food at the stalls, people come and go with their shopping, and the place feels more like a neighbourhood than a tourist attraction.
Try one or two things that look appealing instead of turning breakfast into a list of dishes to find. Suzhou cooking is often delicate and slightly sweet, which may come as a surprise if you are used to stronger or spicier flavours. For breakfast, look out for local noodle dishes such as Fengzhen noodles and Aozhao noodles, two Suzhou favourites. Later, for a proper sit-down meal, try squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, a whole fish sliced and fried until crisp, then served with a sweet-and-sour sauce. For something lighter, try jiuniang cake, a small local sweet.
Spend the afternoon around Shiquan Street. There are cafés, restaurants, small shops and older buildings along the street. After the market, you may be happy to sit down with a drink rather than add another museum to the day. The area also gives you a sense of how younger people spend time in the old city today.
The Master of the Nets Garden is best left for the evening. It is smaller than the Humble Administrator's Garden, and its scale makes it feel more intimate. When performances bring music and opera into the courtyards, the pavilions become part of the setting rather than just scenery behind the stage.
If you are travelling with parents or children, check the performance time and plan dinner around it. Once the performance ends, go back to the hotel. There is no need to squeeze in another attraction.
Day 3: Jinji Lake and Modern Suzhou

Jinji Lake is a good change after two days among old streets and enclosed gardens. The Right Bank has broad walkways, public art and open views across the water. Start with a walk, or simply sit for a while if the group needs a slower morning.
At Ligongdi, stop for lunch at one of the restaurants or cafés along the promenade. This is a better place to take a proper break than to treat lunch as something to fit between attractions. You can look across the lake, rest your feet and decide how much energy is left for the afternoon.
If the weather is clear, a Jinji Lake cruise is an easy way to end the trip. From the water, the skyline opens up and the city feels less enclosed than it does in the old quarters. Best of all, you can take in the view without adding another long walk.
Is three days enough?
Three days will not cover all of Suzhou, but it is enough to get a feel for the city. You will walk through a classical garden, follow a canal, hear a local performance, watch a market get on with its morning business and spend time beside a modern lakefront.
Some of the best moments may be the least dramatic: a view through a garden window, a bridge between two old houses, a bowl of noodles after a long walk, or a quiet hour by Jinji Lake before dinner. That slower pace is part of what makes Suzhou such an easy addition to a Shanghai trip.
