Championing Underserved & Fashion's Impact on Sustainability: Minister Indranee Rajah Unveils Top Winners for 10th Singapore Good Design Awards

SINGAPORE, Aug. 31, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Singapore's cross-disciplinary design chamber, the Design Business Chamber Singapore (DBCS) announces its top seven winners for the 2023 Singapore Good Design Awards (SG Mark), in commemoration of the mark's 10th year anniversary.

Celebrating a decade of design excellence, the winners were unveiled by the Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Ministry of National Development, Ms Sim Ann and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Second Minister for Finance, and Second Minister for National Development, Ms Indranee Rajah at the Gala Awards ceremony held at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre today.

The seven Platinum, Gold and Special Mention winners were selected among 172 entries across eight categories for their innovative designs, with notable designs inspired by pandemic experiences and are now bettering the lives of underserved communities. This includes Platinum winner Philips Ctainer's plug-and-play CT scanner and Gold winners Dormitory Association Singapore Limited's reimagined migrant workers' living spaces and DBS' sustainable Better World Cafe. 

Since 2013, the acclaimed accolade has honoured over 636 outstanding designs and businesses globally to foster an inclusive and supportive industry for creative designers.

"SG Mark is more than just an award; it is an accolade that represents a benchmark of design quality and recognises the best designs in business that bring tangible change into the everyday lives of communities, while driving our vision of equity and inclusion," said Hong Khai Seng, Vice-President of DBCS.

This year's Special Category will spotlight sustainable design and fashion impact in partnership with the Singapore Fashion Council. The award category seeks to acknowledge lesser known designs that address fashion impact and sustainability efforts across the world, including the UNI Green Series, whose design team pioneered a sustainable method to give these uniforms a new lease of life, while providing retired garment workers with employment opportunities.

Platinum award winner, Philips Ctainer also stood out in the Spatial Design category, with its team of Singaporean designers developing the first-of-its-kind plug-and-play CT scanning technology to improve healthcare access across remote and underserved countries like Laos.

Carrying on the spirit of helping the underserved is gold award winner Project Commune. The 19-week project applied visual communication and 3D models to redesign the living environment for Singapore's migrant workers to provide a higher quality of life and promote collective ownership of their homes away from home.

Apart from using the globally recognised SG Mark logo to enhance their designs' value in local and international creative economies, winners can also look to display their designs on the website, and at the Millenia Walk exhibition from 21 September to 1 October this year.
