LOS ANGELES, June 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Most consumers plan to show Dad the same amount of love this Father's Day as they showed Mom on Mother's Day, according to PriceGrabber®. Results from PriceGrabber's 2012 Father's Day Shopping survey reveal that 70 percent of consumers are planning to spend the same amount of money on Father's Day gifts as they did on Mother's Day gifts this year, with 57 percent planning to spend less than $100 on gifts. Twenty-one percent of consumers plan to spend between $100 and $249 on gifts, 11 percent plan to spend more than $250, and 11 percent said they don't have a budget when shopping for Father's Day gifts this year. Conducted from April 10 to April 23, 2012, the survey includes responses from 4,450 U.S. online shopping consumers.
Practical presents rank as top Father's Day gift selection
Dads can expect to receive traditional Father's Day presents again this year, with practical gifts such as tools, auto accessories and appliances ranking as the top choice. When consumers were asked to select all of the types of gifts they plan to purchase for Father's Day, 41 percent said practical gifts, 23 percent indicated hobby related gifts such as golf, baseball or sporting goods equipment, and 21 percent selected entertainment gifts such as consumer electronics, music, videos games or movies as presents. Another 21 percent plan to buy clothing and accessories such as wallets, ties, shoes or jackets, and 15 percent are opting for an outdoor item purchase such as barbeque tools or outdoor furniture. According to the survey, only 18 percent plan to buy a tech-type gift for Father's Day such as a computer, a tablet or a smartphone. When those planning to give a tech gift were asked to select all of the types of tech-related presents they expect to buy, 48 percent said a tablet, 23 percent selected a smartphone, 20 percent noted a computer, 13 percent said a camera and 12 percent indicated a TV purchase.
Most consumers plan to buy Father's Day gifts online; free shipping entices shoppers
When consumers were asked how they plan to purchase their Father's Day gifts this year, 56 percent said they will buy from online stores via their computers, while 36 percent plan to buy in brick-and-mortar stores. Only 2 percent of survey respondents plan to purchase gifts from an online store via a mobile device. When consumers were asked to select all of the retailer tactics that will entice them to buy a product or a service for Father's Day, 59 percent said free shipping. The second most attractive retailer tactic was price cuts, with 48 percent of the vote, while 43 percent of consumers indicated sales and 36 percent said coupons. Eighteen percent of shoppers said they will not be influenced by retailer tactics.
"Consumers are still budget conscience and will look for deals when Father's Day shopping this year," commented Graham Jones, general manager of PriceGrabber. "Even though most shoppers plan to spend under $100 on their Dad this year based on our survey data, it's not surprising to see that retailer tactics such as free shipping, price cuts, sales and coupons will help sweeten the deal when enticing consumers to buy gifts for Dad this holiday."
Most shoppers will buy Father's Day gifts two weeks prior
The month of June will be a busy time for consumers purchasing Father's Day gifts. According to the PriceGrabber survey, 30 percent of shoppers plan to purchase Father's Day gifts two weeks prior, 28 percent said they will buy gifts one week prior, and 16 percent of respondents will purchase gifts one month in advance.
