All Saints Catholic Church Announces 'Stand Up For Justice' Protest Event on April 7th
Changes to local zoning, as well as recent anti-homeless ordinance enforcement, have inspired community leaders to organize an April 7 protest across O.P.C.H.
OAKLAND PARK, Fla., April 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A public protest, labeled "Stand Up For Justice", is now scheduled to occur the evening of April 7th, 2016. The protest, according to the event's organizers, was created as a response to recent, focused and stricter local enforcement of ordinances deemed the "criminalization of the city's unhoused population," including recent zoning changes that have resulted in the closing of the All Saints Catholic Mission & Soup Kitchen.
Led and organized by local community leaders Howard Pyle, Arthur Carl Kanev and Father Bob Caudill of the All Saints Catholic Church, "Stand Up For Justice" intends to publicly demonstrate local and growing disillusionment with what is seen as "inhumane and egregious treatment towards the sanctity of…the church and the homeless who seek sanctuary within it." The protest, along with a free dinner (food-sharing), will take place in the park directly in front of the Oakland Park City Hall building.
Protestors look to raise awareness not only of the recent closing of the All Saints Catholic Mission, which was forced by recent zoning changes, but also of what has been seen as the ongoing criminalization of the local homeless population. This "criminalization", as it were, began with a recent ban on public food-sharing, one instituted and enforced by both the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, Florida. Citing the Soup Kitchen's closing and the recent cases of 90-year-old Arnold Abbot and Pastor Dwayne Black, both of whom received multiple citations for violating the ban, event organizers look to demonstrate what they see as both a lack of compassion and humanity from the government officials responsible for enforcing the ban.
"The City of Oakland Park, Florida, in conjunction with representatives of the Broward Sheriff's Office, have repeatedly invaded the sanctity of the All Saints Catholic Church," says protest organizers, "(as well as) imposing daily fines of $500 against the Church for continuing to share food with the homeless and other needy folks."
