Baby Boomers Go Under the Knife

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Nov. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --  A recent study released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) indicates that 13.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2010, up 5% from previous years.  Facelifts rose among 9% in 2010 with nearly 113,000 procedures performed.  As the coveted baby boomer generation ages, cosmetic surgery continues to show rebounds.  Dr. Tenley Lawton, a Newport Beach–based board certified plastic surgeon, sees the trend toward baby boomer patients continuing to fuel her practice's growth.

"When I first opened my office, most of my patients were in their 20's and 30's and seeking breast implants and mommy makeovers.  More recently I have begun seeing a bigger shift in older men and women seeking procedures to help make them look as young as they feel," Dr. Lawton says.

Facelifts are the most popular procedure among Dr. Lawton's baby boomer patients. In a study in the February issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the vast majority of facelift patients were overwhelmingly satisfied with their results.  Of the 122 patients polled for the study, the average subjective reduction of their apparent age was 11.9 years.*

While a facelift does not stop the aging process, it can improve visible signs of aging by removing excess facial fat, tightening underlying muscles and redraping the skin on the face and neck. Incisions are camouflaged in natural creases around the ear and hairline. Results of a facelift may last 5-10 years.
