Buena Vista University Issues Notification of Data Breach
STORM LAKE, Iowa, July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Buena Vista University (BVU) said today that a data breach has occurred on its campus. BVU engaged a nationally-recognized computer forensics team to conduct an investigation and has learned someone gained unauthorized access to a BVU database. The information potentially accessed includes names, Social Security numbers and some driver's license numbers for BVU students (applicants, former and current), parents, faculty/staff (current and former), alumni and some donor records. These records date back to 1987.
There is no indication that any of this personal information has been or is being misused or disclosed to other people, according to university officials. The unauthorized access was confirmed in June, after which the process for accurately identifying and notifying the 93,000 people involved began. The incident has now been referred to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota.
"The security of all personal information provided to us is of utmost importance to the university," Frederick Moore, BVU president, said. "We deeply regret this incident has occurred, and we apologize for any concern this has caused our stakeholders and the community. We take this breach seriously and are taking steps to mitigate any risk of potential harm."
The university is in the process of providing formal notification to state attorneys general and to authorities in Puerto Rico. It also mailed letters to all 93,000 individuals whose data may have been accessed, informing them of the incident and about steps they can take to protect their personal information and credit.
BVU has contracted with Experian, a leading national credit protection agency, to provide individuals with a full suite of credit monitoring and protection services at no charge. The notification letter arriving in mailboxes over the next week explains how to sign up for the free credit monitoring and notification services, gain access to a dedicated team of fraud resolution representatives and obtain identity theft insurance coverage.
Further information is posted at www.bvu.edu. Those with questions may call BVU at 1-866-450-4636. The call center is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.
